Essential Oil Precautions

Essential Oil Precautions

Essential oils are very potent and powerful and should only be used in small doses.  When using oils here are some precautions to keep in mind:

1. Do not attempt to replace existing medications unless under the guidance of your physician.  If you become suddenly ill with something you don’t understand go to a doctor immediately.

2.Keep oils away from children at all times.  Do not let them suck on the lids and be careful to keep oils away from children’s eyes.  Keep from putting oils on your children’s hands so they will not in turn rub their eyes.

3.Store oils in dark brown bottles in a cool dark place.

4.Label each mixture you make telling you exactly what is in it, the date when mixture was made, what you are using it for, who its for. This prevents confusion when treating different children with different issues.

5. Make sure your oils identify the botanical name, cautions, use, extraction method, country of origin, constituents, heavy metal free, microbiology (hazardous pathogens) part of the plant used and that its from a reputable source.

One example of this is Thymus vulgaris is the botanical name for thyme.  You can buy a very powerful and much cheaper thyme containing phenols, which needs to be used with care in topical use, it can be aggressive on the skin. But sweet thyme containing gentle alcohols is much preferred for use on children, as it is hazard free.  Avoid essential oils that are poorly identified.

6. Use less rather than more.

7. Patch test ~ if you believe your child might have a reaction apply one drop of the oil to the inside of the forearm for 24-48 hrs.

8. If there is irritation apply lavender oil or cold pressed coconut oil on area.

9. There are some oils on this list we do not use if pregnant or nursing.

10. Do not use Oregano until 3 or older.  Never use tansy!!!  It is toxic and neurotoxic and should not be used in aromatherapy.  If epileptic use caution with basil, hyssop, rosemary, fennel, thyme.  There are different lists from different aroma therapists so study it out and use caution.

Remember oils only kill bad bacteria, never good bacteria. When in doubt…put the oil on the feet. When in doubt…use True Lavender.
